UNH Malice

Josh “Blue ” Bealieu and Matt “Subzero” Allen talk to us about New Hampshire’s Malice Ultimate;

New Hampshire – NE – NNE – D1   Durham, NH

How does playing in NH affect your playing/practicing?

Playing in New Hampshire is only a real issue during the winter time when there is significant snow coverage. Other than that, we man up and deal with the hurricane winds and freezing rain that seem to be a staple of our tournament appearances.

How is the recruiting process going so far this year?

Fantastic. So far this year we’ve had a consistent showing of 80 guys, about 40 returners and 40 new guys. For the first time, we have a group of freshmen that have actually played competitive ultimate before, so we’ve had to do significantly less teaching than ever before. Hopefully this translates to a quicker turnaround into our A team cuts.

How many returning players are back and/or how many players did you lose from last year?

We lost 8 players from our A team roster of 24. We returned just under 40 men from both A and B team, as well as a few players who were on hiatus last year.

What tournaments are you planning on attending this year?

New England Open, UNH Spring Open, High Tide, ideally travel for a February tournament down south, and hopefully arranging scrimmages with some other teams in the region throughout the spring.

Favorite tournament story from someone on your team:

Chris “Aero” Cardarelli lays out for a D, then when he got up he frantically screamed for everyone to stop yelling, “HOLD ON GUYS I LOST MY GLASSES!” Players began looking down and around him checking for his glasses, when another one of our players finally found them securely planted on Aero’s face. He was amazed to realize they were still on and played it off like he was just joking.

When does your team play best, man or zone?

We seem to work best with horizontal, historically, but are looking to run both stacks efficiently. On defense, we’re driven by tough man defense with lots of layouts.

Live, Freeze or Die is always a good tournament in the winter, what is it like playing in NH in the winter?

Very cold and very slow. It’s like playing water polo in the desert.

What is your favorite tournament in New England?

New England Open.

Any rivals?

Dartmouth.

Why the name change to Malice?

We used to be Alice in the 2009 season, and we decided to go back to our roots with a little ferocity.

Who are your captains? And who would be your All-region nominees)

Matt “Sub Zero” Allen and Drew Blake. Drew Blake or Josh Beaulieu.

How does a typical practice run?

Jog, stretch, then we do air alert.

What is your season goal for this year?

Day 2 of regionals.
